The Holmes’ 5 bedroom architecturally designed home is situated on a one of a kind plot of Kanuka cladden goodness overlooking Lake Wanaka. The contemporary architecture resonates with the surrounding natural landscape by design and use of materials.

Nathan a builder and Sarah an Artist, want to utilise their respective talents within this bathroom. Nathan will undertake all construction and fit-out of the bathroom apart from plumbing, electrical and tiling. He wants the design to incorporate as much as possible to use his skills and keep the budget down.

Sarah want’s the bathroom to be something different, cave like with sophistication. The Wieliczka Salt Mine Chapel Cave in Poland is the theme for the bathroom with an added twist of clean lined modernism. The chapel being underground within the salt mine; the walls and floor are the natural stone finish of the cave, it features a grand stone staircase and a huge crystal chandelier. Given the intense natural surroundings of the home, the Holmes’ want the natural materials surrounding them bought within this hollow.

The space itself is limited for a master ensuite of a house of such grandeur. A double walk in shower is a must, as is a bath. Subtle lighting is critical to ensure a relaxing soak in the bath whilst looking out at the vast mountains and lake during the early evening sunset. The budget is limited for the caliber of the build, therefore extending this with clever material choice and design features is paramount.
The deciding factors behind the material choice were: Colour, texture (Smooth) and the fact that the Corian has a 'soft' aesthetic against the raw rough, natural stone that was used elsewhere in the bathroom.
